RECOVERY INSIGHT

Advance-fee recovery scams after an initial loss

Recognizing secondary fraud that demands taxes, bonds or clearance fees to “release” stolen funds.

After a primary fraud, victims are frequently pitched guaranteed recovery in exchange for upfront fees. These advance-fee schemes exploit urgency and hope rather than any real freeze process.

Legitimate lawyers do not require crypto “AML taxes,” gift-card bonds or secret clearance payments to release funds. Ask for verifiable licensing details and written engagement terms.

If you already paid a recovery fee, treat that payment as a distinct loss event. Preserve wallets, chats, invoices and voice notes for the secondary actors.

Report both the original and secondary fraud with a consistent timeline. Mixing the narratives without dates and amounts makes institutional and counsel review harder.
