RECOVERY INSIGHT

Check washing and altered-payee evidence

Preserving originals, images and bank correspondence when checks are chemically or digitally altered.

Check washing and payee alteration schemes change the beneficiary after a legitimate check is issued. Banks and counsel need both the intended payment record and the cleared item.

Retain carbon copies or issue logs, front-and-back images of the cleared check, deposit bank details and any fraud affidavits already submitted. Do not mark up the only original image.

Ask the paying bank which collecting bank presented the item. Inquire whether surveillance or account data for the depositing customer may be reachable through lawful process.

Prompt affidavit and claim procedures with your bank can be time-limited. Parallel civil options depend on whether a solvent depositing account or identifiable actor remains.
