Escrow scams: fake platforms and payment proof

How to document losses when a supposed escrow agent or marketplace never held funds safely.

Fake escrow platforms mimic legitimate closing or marketplace protection. Victims typically pay into accounts or wallets controlled by the scammer while believing funds are held neutrally.

Capture the escrow website URLs, terms pages, wallet or bank details supplied, transaction confirmations and chat instructions. WHOIS and hosting clues may later support jurisdiction mapping.

Compare the supposed escrow entity against real corporate registries. Cloned branding of known firms is common; independent verification often exposes the mismatch quickly.

If a real escrow attorney or company was impersonated, notify that firm and preserve the impersonation materials. Their cooperation can help banks and platforms triage the fraud report.
