RECOVERY INSIGHT

Exchange KYC and subpoena routes in crypto recovery

When centralized exchanges become the practical gateway for identifying counterparties.

Centralized exchanges that collect KYC data can be pivotal once on-chain tracing shows deposits into their hot or deposit wallets. Without a regulated intermediary, identifying a beneficial owner is often far harder.

Lawful process varies by country: subpoenas, production orders, Norwich Pharmacal-style disclosure or mutual legal assistance may all play a role. The workable route depends on where the exchange entity sits and what local courts will order.

Victims should still gather TXIDs and destination tags promptly. Exchanges respond faster when requests cite precise deposits, amounts and times rather than narrative summaries alone.

Even strong KYC leads do not guarantee recovery. Accounts may be emptied, layered through multiple platforms or held in false names. Disclosure is a step toward options—not an outcome by itself.
