Letter of credit fraud: document discrepancies to keep

Trade-document red flags and records that matter when LC proceeds or goods never materialize.

Letter of credit fraud often hinges on forged or discrepant shipping and inspection documents. The banking file and the commercial file must be preserved together.

Retain the LC text, amendments, presentation documents, courier receipts, inspection certificates and correspondence with advising or confirming banks. Note every discrepancy raised or waived.

If goods never arrived or were substituted, gather bills of lading, port records and insurer notices. Those materials help separate documentary fraud from ordinary commercial disputes.

Cross-border LC matters can involve multiple banks and governing rules. Early mapping of issuing, advising and negotiating banks guides where notices and claims may be directed.
